Cairo is the capital of Egypt, and the largest metropolitan area in the Middle-East, Africa, and Arab World; with a population of around 17 million people, spread over 453 square kilometers. The city is famous for being associated with ancient Egypt, with the ancient city of Memphis and the Giza Pyramids falling in its proximity. In addition to the Pharaonic sites, Cairo is famous for its fabulous medieval Islamic city and Coptic sites in Old Cairo.  The city also features Al-Azhar University; the world’s second-oldest institution of higher learning.


Cairo has a hot desert climate, usually with high humidity because of its location close to the Mediterranean Sea and the Nile Delta. Temperatures in winter range from 14-22 °C (57-72 °F) in the morning, while night-time lows drop to 11-5 °C (52-41 °F). In summer, the highs rarely surpass 40 °C (104 °F), and lows drop to about 20 °C (68 °F).

Tourist Attractions

1 Giza pyramid complex
One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the famous pyramids of Giza. It is by far the oldest of the ancient Wonders and the only one still in existence.
The complex consists of the Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as Khufu and constructed c. 2560–2540 BC), the Pyramid of Khafre (or Chephren), the Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx lies on the east side of the complex.

2 The Egyptian Museum
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (known as the Egyptian Museum/Museum of Cairo), offers an extensive collection of 120,000 items of ancient Egyptian antiquities.
The museum consists of two main floors, and is located on the tip of Tahrir Square in downtown cairo.

3 Tahrir Square
Tahrir Square is the very center of the modern city, founded during the mid-19th century with the establishment of modern downtown Cairo.
The square is surrounded by buildings like the American University in Cairo, the Egyptian Museum, and several other hotels and governmental buildings.
Tahrir Square (literally, “Liberation Square”) is famous for the massive 2011 Egyptian Revolution protests that took place in January of that year.

4 Cairo Tower
Cairo Tower is the tallest free-standing concrete structure in Egypt and North Africa. The tower stands at 187 meters in Zamalek district on Gezira Island.
It provides a 360° view of Cairo, along with the Giza Pyramids in the distance to the west.

5 Old Cairo
Also known as Coptic Cairo. Contains the remains of the ancient Roman fortress of Babylon, on the original site of “Fustat” (the first Arab settlement in Egypt, 7th century AD).
It holds a lot of old Christian churches including the Hanging Church, the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, other Christian or Coptic buildings, in addition to the Coptic Museum.
The Old Cairo area is also home to the Amr Ibn Al-‘As Mosque, the first mosque in Egypt and the most important religious center of former “Fustat”, founded in 642 AD.

6 Islamic Cairo
Cairo holds one of the greatest concentrations of historical monuments of Islamic architecture in the world, with hundreds of mosques, tombs, madrasas, mansions, caravanserais, and fortifications dating from the Islamic era.
The location holds several important religious shrines such as the al-Hussein Mosque, the Mausoleum of Imam al-Shafi’i, the Tomb of Sayyida Ruqayya, the Mosque of Sayyida Nafisa, and others.
Islamic Cairo is also home to the Mosque of al-Azhar; one of the most important and lasting institutions of Islamic thought, and home to the world’s oldest university.

7 The Citadel of Cairo
A grand castle built by Salah Al-Din in 1176 AD. It was the center of Egyptian government and residence of its rulers until 1874 AD.
The citadel holds the National Military Museum, the 14th century Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad, and the 19th century Mosque of Muhammad Ali (the founder of modern Egypt).

8 Khan El-Khalili
Is a major souk (marketplace) in the Islamic district of Cairo. The bazaar district is one of Cairo’s main attractions for tourists, where visitors will find many merchants selling perfume, spices, Gold, Egyptian hand craft.
In addition to shops, there are several traditional restaurants, street food vendors, and coffee shops. One of the oldest and most famous coffee shops is Fishawi’s, established in 1773 AD.

Visitors get to enjoy their night under the stars in Cairo, and ride a felucca in the longest river in the world: “Nile River”.

11 Coffee & shisha
In Cairo there’s a coffee shop on every corner, and sometimes they could be found in the middle of the road.

12 Entertainment
The Giza Zoo is perfect place for tourists to have some fun with animals. A visit to Orman Garden is also a must; as it is one of the most famous Botanical gardens in Egypt, built in 1875 AD.
